Spfl To Be Shown In China

Recommended Posts

The SPFL have signed a tv deal with china.

A £500,000 pounds a year deal for 3years, main stream chineese tv.

Is part of a deal which was signed back in 2013, and ultimately the SPFL part is just a small add-on of a rights deal agreed between a Singaporean company and a digital broadcaster in China.

Obviously any extra money coming in is a plus, but isn't in anyway going to generate any major interest in Scottish football.

55 live games to be broadcast in China has been mentioned.

Do we even get 55 via Sky & BT Sports?

We often get just the one per week. Two if Celtic are playing away midweek.

I've just come back from living there for a year and didn't see a single SPL game on the telly. Had 200 channels and always checked what football was on at the weekend. I figured they stopped showing it once they realised what they'd bought.

There's something like 3 Chinese players currently playing in the top division of leagues throughout Europe.

The CSL is not the highest quality (although Guangzhou Evergrande did win the Asian CL recently), but has much more money in it than the SPFL.

Derek Riordan was on £30.000 during his short stint at Shaanxi Chanba.

Any Chinese player who does come to Scotland, would be of a level that the only boost in interest / viewing numbers would be said players direct family.

Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A plus the EPL are the only leagues of interest within China, and even then that's reflected more in shirt-sales rather than viewing figures.

Most popular TV sport in China just now is the NBA.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Du_Wei_%28footballer%29

10 years ago and one game.

And before that Fan Zhiyi played for Dundee.

I knew Du Wei played in the infamous Clyde game where Roy Keane made his debut. Hadn't realised that was his only appearance.

To add insult to injury, he was hooked at half time for Adam Virgo.
