Gregor The Flyer
Alright folks will be in Australia in January and looking at a few nights in Melbourne. Found some good deals on hotels in Dandenong and Preston. How easy is it to get into Melbourne from these places by taxi and public transport? Cheers Gregor
SteveMcD
Alright folks will be in Australia in January and looking at a few nights in Melbourne. Found some good deals on hotels in Dandenong and Preston. How easy is it to get into Melbourne from these places by taxi and public transport? Cheers Gregor Dandenong:- Ca. 23 miles from the CBD. Adding a taxi charge onto your accommodation, would be more expensive than being in a hotel in the downtown. Public transport is OK, train takes +/- 40 minutes. Services go through to ca. 1:00am. Preston:- Ca. 6 miles out. As well as the train, it's also on the tram system. Time to city is +/- 20-25 minutes. If going by public transport, get yourself a myki card (Melbourne version of an Oyster card). Can get them pre-loaded at the airport and Southern Cross Station. Lots of info on public transport in Victoria here http://ptv.vic.gov.au/ When is it you're planning on going. Don't forget the Australian Open tennis is on in January which pushes hotel prices upwards. Also the "Big Day Out" music festival is also on on one weekend. If was going myself would ditch Dandenong, have Preston as a last option, and try looking around the likes of St. Kilda. Next to the beach, 10 minutes to the city, lots of nightlife etc. PS:- Don't forget the sunblock.

ParisInAKilt
Yeah St Kilda would be better than the other options. More going on and close to the city / beach. Great place, not as obviously touristy as Sydney but always something to see and do
