I'm having a weekend in Aviemore soon and would be good to get some advice on things to do (group of guys) in the area and pubs/restaurants to visit or avoid.

Anyone familiar with the area and able to advise?

Cheers

Parky,

Would highly recommend the Cairngorm Hotel for food and the bar is usually quite lively too.

Also, was talking to someone from Aviemore up in Kylesku last week and the were saying that a pub which was called the Winking Owl has just been done up (and possibly renamed). I've been in it's old incarnation which although was a bit of a dump, was usually quite good fun. This guy recommended the new improved version, tho I haven't been in it myself.

Re stuff to do, why not check out Glenmore Lodge? The run a load of different activities (I assume it's outdoorsy stuff you're looking for).

I was up in Aviemore a few months back - wasnt that impressed with the Cairngorm hotel tbh. Everything seemed to be deep fried to within an inch of its life. I might have been unlucky though. Thought the pub across the road was better but it seems to have closed down so shows how much I know :-))

The Winking Owl hadnt reopened when i was up but Ive also heard good things about it - they sell all the Cairngorm beers so definitely worth a look.

If you like pizza you should check out a small pizza place called PIZZARIACH - its heading north out the village, near the Cairngorm brewery, can sit in or takeaway. Easily the best pizza Ive had in Scotland.

Sorry to hear that about the Cairngorm if that's the case. It's probably 2 years since I've been there, but I've been many times and it was always good.

Either way, I'd still recommend the bar.

:ok:

The bar is indeed excellent :ok:

It was the wee resturaunt bit I didnt like, but as I said, may well have been an off night.

What dates are you visiting Aviemore? I gig regularly in the Cairngorm, usually good craic and if you's enjoy Scottish music with a few TA songs thrown in then I'm sure you's will have a good night :)

Any recommendations for things to do with kids? Going there with the wife and little one for a little break next month.

Visit Landmark at Carrbridge. Lots to keep kids amused from aerial walkways through the pinewoods to usual amusement stuff. Don't think it is very cheap though.

yep Landmark is great for kids, for a whole morning/ afternoon. worth the cost as they love it. also take your bikes, loads of good trails around aviemore - up past Carrbridge and around loch morlich. theres also a zip wire place - google it, looks pretty good for kids. canoeing/ water sports on loch morlich. take the funicular railway up the top of the hill at the ski slopes, pony trekking if your kids like that - tons of other outdoorsy stuff . my kids love it up there.

Cheers. Already on the list for one of the days. Just checked the admissions prices and you're not wrong! Jumps from £5.75 in winter to £17.50 in the summer, per adult. Ah well, it is what it is. One bonus is that it looks like kids under 4 are free. It doesn't say those precise words, but I think it can be assumed. They class a child as being between 4 and 14.

Cheers. She is almost 2, so probably a bit young for some of that. But Landmark looks awesome and she would probably love the railway.

yeh landmark is the spot. Oh, and there is also a small funfair place in the town. I mean literally about 4 rides and they are just wee ones but a 2 year old might like it. on the left of the main road - down a wee road as you go out the north end of aviemore town.

Cairngorm Brewery Tour....
IMHO the BEST microbrewery in Scotland ?

And plenty samples at end of tour from the bottling plant

The lively locals pub is the Dhu Below.

Loads of outdoor stuff to do.

The hike up Meall A Buchaille takes about 3hrs and has stunning views over the northern corries.

Or mountain bike around Loch Morlich ?

Old Bridge Inn is a good wee pub

Good food in the Italian at the roundabout on way in, buffet is good value

Rothiemurchus estate has different activities on the go including Quad bikes, segways, etc

http://www.rothiemurchus.net/index.html

Last time was in that Italian was 85 ; office ski trip

- aviemore centre still open then

Was a Chinese in Main Street : we were in same time as Chris Quentin / Brian Tilsley

Fairly big celeb back then

2 of us did the white lady on a kids wooden sled after a morning in the bar at base station

I had jeans ; trainers on ; my elderly mentor had wellies on....frozen moustache

Liftys were laughing ; am sure wouldn't get away with it now

Always been a braw place for a holiday

(Older viewers may recall Santa land...)
