  1. Geography me bollix ! Ye Brits owe allegiance to the Queen (as recently confirmed by your recent referendum !), we are a Republic. We much prefer the term - "these islands "
  2. 4 British teams ! , did Scotland receive a late bye ?Hint , the Republic do not kowtow to a Queen .
  3. Who can tell - there may be hard times ahead for both teams. However we have the draw on the 12th December , the opening of the ticket portal 2 days later but most of all we have the anticipation - the thoughts of sourcing tickets , travelling with family & friends & a traditionally vibrant , peaceful army of fans , a great Tournament destination & the pride of flying your colours & flag abroad . Footballing qualification for major competitions has always galvanised this country & the feelgood factor is huge at the moment. Sure we may travel in hope rather than expectation but at least we will be travelling in our thousands & isn't football , to a great extent , all about anticipation & hope ?
  4. The stats do not lie , when the Euros commence next year it will mark the passage of 18 years since Scotland last qualified for a major Tournament . Since that time Ireland have qualified for a World Cup in 2002 (where once again we advanced from our group ) & two successive European Championships , we had a great team in 2002 & played some great football , more recently we have had to cut our coat according to our cloth as the standard of players is not what it has been in the past. I would sincerely hope that my posts are not seen as " jibes & trolls " but as an argument that if you don't have the talent pool to advance by playing pretty , expansive football then you have to adopt a more pragmatic game plan in order to advance. As for BraveheartGordon's avowed support for all our putative opponents may I say that I & the entire Nation are gutted to hear it , our anticipation levels have been duly tempered !!
  5. Now , now - I never said that . I merely stated that given our current panel we have no option but to adopt a pragmatic attitude & play to our strengths which is basically the reason the country is in a state of delirium at the moment - we have qualified. The alternative is of course to play a more expansive game thereby playing into the hands of technically superior teams thus ensuring that we watch the Euros on our TV's as opposed to being there !
  6. Hilarious , such a rush to be aggrieved without thinking ! Of course any side can attempt to play " decent " football - the fact that getting the ball down & attempting to play expansive football is commendable if you have the players to do so is admirable but Scotland don't have such players , the fact that you wish Scotland to persist in this ultimately doomed endeavour is of course your right. You must however accept that the other side of the coin is that Scotland will fail to qualify for major tournaments for the foreseeable future. Football ultimately at International level is about progress - points garnered & qualification gained - anything else is secondary. Pragmatism is the name of the game , the FAI stand to generate €12,000,000 for qualifying - that should help to progress our game ! Roll on the draw on the 12th December - I quite fancy Bordeaux , good wine & food !
  7. You are most definitely kidding yourself , Scotland , like ourselves , do not have the infrastructure , population to produce a truly great team. Yes , both countries can and have produced truly great players but our respective population densities mitigate against us producing 11 such players at the same time. If , unlike ourselves , you continue to believe in the fallacy that you can out football the bigger football nations then you are doomed to watch a team playing pretty ineffective football while Ireland continue to seek the most effective manner of qualifying for major tournaments - once again ! Now where's my passport ?
  8. Ireland are pragmatic and play to their strengths which is why we will be decamping in our thousands in the summer to France , our defense is excellent , we have a combative midfield & genuine class in McCarthy & Hoolihan & match winners upfront in Long & Walters. Importantly we have a rigid game plan which enables us to compete away against higher ranking teams & to win in places like Georgia , such a plan worked against Bosnia away & set the mood for last night's well executed victory in which we played some very decent football. Let's not kid ourselves - the majority of Scottish fans would give their eye teeth to be in our position & the mode of football played to ensure such qualification would come a distant second. Sure Poland 2012 was a disastrous campaign but we got there & the fans , myself included , had a brilliant time , roll on France.
  9. Dancing in Sarejevo , hardly - but you should see the knees up in Ireland tonight ! Is it me or has it got very quiet here tonight ?
  10. Indeed we were by a long way the worst team there but what fun the Irish hordes that travelled there had , great country , great food & drink - although you had to be there to savour it ! - watching as a neutral of TV doesn't come near
  11. An embarrassing thread. Sure Irish fans enjoyed their trip to Glasgow & the Scottish fans were tremendous craic in Dublin - what a great weekend that was. Football is however all about results & I fervently hoped that Scotland as our nearest challenger lost their games & was naturally delighted when Georgia put the cat among the pigeons . If Ireland manage to qualify for France I for one will not be looking around & saying isn't it a pity that Scottish fans are not here ! While I appreciate the general bonhomie between both sets of fans this condolence nonsense is bollox . As for this long ball discussion - you play to your strengths & Scotland seem remarkably naive in this regard , playing football on the deck is one thing but the reality is that you need to have the players equipped to do so
  12. We certainly would like to return to the status quo & see the game versus yourselves replayed - leaving yourselves on 11 points & us on17 , a bit of a dead rubber for yourselves & a chance for us to gazump Poland !Oh and the moral crusade paid off to the tune of 5 million euro & a draw against Estonia to qualify for the Euros in 2012 - you remember watching that on tv surely ! On the bright side James McCarthy & Aidan McGeady are still in the mix !
  13. 4 points off the World Champions & 6 off Georgia - you should reflect on that Pal ! Bitter & gutted - but I note not surprised , enjoy the Gibraltar game ! Bet you that the international media aren't saying that we are one of the worst teams " over seenat " international level !
  14. And cherrio to you pal ! a Dublin is buzzing , the World Champions have been pissed on & Scotland are bystanders ! Back to the lesser nations again
