PompeySon's Achievements

  1. I was lucky enough to see Scotland play in the World Cup in 98. I was 15, and came home full of excitement and anticipation of many more campaigns and finals to come. I'm now 34 and having followed Scotland all over Europe I'm now getting to the point where stepping back from it is almost inevitable. There are a number of factors. Having a young family makes the expense of travelling to support the team harder to justify to the other half. The consistently disappointing results, littered more often than not with squad withdrawals and a general sub-standard performance makes it harder to justify to yourself. The 4-6-0 in Prague still, still, pisses me off. By far the biggest contributor is the SFA. An organisation so steeped in the dark ages and old boys network it's hard to see a proactive way forward. We need a complete clear out but it won't happen. McGhee's continued presence in the managerial set-up is evidence of the old boys network being alive and well. The ticket pricing is outrageous. ill be there tonight and at the England game in June but after that i think it'll be game over for me. I've done my bit. Good luck to those prepared to stick at it.
  2. Polandvs Ukraine, 21st June Marseille Two tickets available. Cat C. £60 pair but would accept £50. I have tickets and can post/send proof if necessary. pm if interested.
  3. A very valid point. These areas are only likely to be accessible via roped access which limits the times when you can get in, ie out with periods of high winds for example. I'm only guessing as I'm not familiar with the layout or inspection plan but fatigue fractures, which I suspect these are, are not always easy to oredict unless you have monitoring in place. The forthcoming investigation will be asking the very question you just have.
  4. Yes. The new bridge will have some of the most technically advanced monitoring systems in the world. Almost all new structures on that scale would have some form of remote monitoring. The existing bridge may well have been monitored but it would have been retrospective and therefore only installed in known areas of high stress, areas of concern etc. The issues with the cables that formed the basis for the business case for a new crossing were identified using monitoring apparatus. The bridge was never designed to carry the volume and weight of modern traffic, so it's not difficult to see why it's starting to show signs of distress. I'm told the defects were in hard to reach areas, so it may be that these were only inspected at longer intervals, say 5-years, during detailed surveys, rather than a more general annual inspection.
  5. Pretty much aye. You'd need to be fairly certain before making the call to shut a main transport link.
  6. As a qualified bridge engineer I'd say the bridge was probably on annual visual inspections, possibly reduced to six monthly if there was any particular concerns. An entirely reasonable examination frequency. The photo I've seen shows a fatigue crack at a critical connection. Obviously not ideal. The problem then is identifying the extent of damage in other connections given the same detail would be replicated over the entire structure. They would have done this fairly quickly, and the fact the bridge is now closed suggests they didn't like what they found. In terms of a fix, physically getting to these will be the biggest problem. Largely dependant on weather and whether or not it's reachable by a walkway (unlikely) or by roped access. Then you have to get steel plates done there to fix it. Interesting to see how this one pans out but glad it ain't my job. A month to fix it would be good going.
  7. Five of us travelling to Poland, four SSC members with tickets and one non-member without. Looking for a ticket for the one on the off chance anyone has any going spare.
