I'm sure I've just heard former Labour defence advisor Admiral Alan West just say on Five Live that we should retain a nuclear deterrent because a nuclear weapon has never been dropped on a nation that possesses such weapon. Doesn't strike me as a particularly strong argument.

We should continue to eat deep fried mars bars as no nuclear weapon has ever been dropped on a country that eats them. Just as logical a reason...

If vote had gin other way ; plan was to relocate to Barrow ?

Loss of jobs ; nuclear threat still on doorstep

Maybe but the Scottish taxpayer wouldn't be paying for them. They are weapons that personally I feel are immoral in their retention and certainly would be in their use. From a military point of view it can also be argued that they are a very expensive white elephant.

The majority of the eu / world don't have them. Why should we?

You know what, if we're all about to die from Moscow I'll take zero comfort in my final minutes knowing well tickle a couple of Russian hamlets.

Wmds only buy us(uk) a seat at the top table, nothing more .

I think a retention of the capability to destroy large cities, whilst simultaneously killing hundreds of thousands of people is money well spent and puts the Great in Britain. I also like seats at top tables and influence at G8 summits. We really are Great.

Woman from Helensburgh on the news there "We're an island nation we need them to defend us".

Naw missus, we need ships and planes for that, not submarines armed with missiles to destroy Moscow....

Aye, there was a snippet of that on 6Music news yesterday.

Strangely for the BBC, every vox pop they found to interview thought renewing trident was a great idea, bar one man who sounded slightly ambivalent: "it'll keep lots of jobs in the area but at what cost?" (or words to that effect).

Gideon's clearly done this to steal a march on the strong possibility of a large anti-Trident Corbyn-led opposition taken it's place in the Commons after the summer....

Yep. Fair play to him, from a purely political point of view it is a good move.
