OLAS
Strachan:- "I hope there's a young superstar out there. Our system will probably be the same, unless two or three players develop who are magnificent. But I can't see that on the horizon so we go with what we have done." http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/34775852 Can't say I'm thrilled with that, but at least he has an open mind on a few things. We really need more cutting edge up front. We should be battering teams like Georgia and being able to see games out when a goal to the good. It's easy to say that, but it's something we should be working on if things are going to be the same.
scottishedgar
Great. Go with what we have done and failed with. I unfortunately feared this may be the case

andyD
We should be battering teams like Georgia and being able to see games out when a goal to the good. It's easy to say that, but it's something we should be working on if things are going to be the same. Who thinks we're not working on that? The problem I see is that defensively we're not that strong. And we have very little we can do about it as we have really no depth to the quality at the back. To me that means we need to change the system, so it's a little worrying to hear that we're not really considering that barring a wonderkid who demands it change. At the moment we tend to get back, form up and try and defend for our lives while hitting on the break with pace. It's had some success, and i think people are far too negative about the last campaign. It was a hard group and a very close run thing. However, the central principal of it relies upon keeping things tight at the back and keeping that clean sheet. We've shown that that's not something we can really do. Be it letting Gibraltar equalise, scoring their first ever goal, or twice letting Poland escape. All out defense isn't something we can do any more, now our strengths lie much more in attack. So we need to shift our system (if not formation) to press higher up the pitch. Play a higher intensity, win the ball back earlier, so we don't have that same pressure on the defense. It's early tho, we're a year from a meaningful game, so we'll see what happens in the meantime.
Return of Yermaw
New campaign doesnt start until next year & there is already negativity! Main negative comments are from the manager who is going to largely persevere with a system that ultimately let him and us down. I also get the impression that those who use the word "negativity" enjoy using the word.

radian_13
he can't change the system and play better players because they don't exist, quite understandable. Not everything is Strachans fault, We weren't that far off in most games and some of the fall has to lay at doors of the players. Some in game decisions by some of them are questionable
ByronLoon1986
Who the f*ck wants to go to Russia anyway?? Next campaign is a perfect opportunity to play some younger players or try something new.. get rid of all the dead wood aswell..
Goozay
First off. I've no idea why yous place so much importance on what Strachan says to the press. He hates talking to the press, so everything he says will be more negative than what he's actually thinking. Next, you can actually select a quote that's more positive than the one the OP led with: "I've not got a problem with age, whether they are 17 or 37," he continued. "The criteria is being able to pass the ball, football intelligence, being willing to come here and work hard. If you've got all that, you are in with a chance of getting in this squad. "What you've got to look at, before the next time we get together in March, a lot can happen. I'm hoping people will throw themselves in front of us and say 'you must pick us'. Preferably younger (but) if it's older I've not got a problem."
hoodster
Surprised one or two of the older boys haven't chucked it, that says to me there is a good spirit in the squad, so onwards and upwards as far as I'm concerned.
bossman4
Not worrying much about what he said. I'd love to see us play 3 at the back but we struggle to find two good centre halfs. System we play suits the squad we have and that wont change massivley by next year unless a Gauld makes an breakthrough in Portugal. As said sort out some of the decision making from players during games may help. Fletcher going with his right foot in Georgia, Marshall playing the goal kick vs Poland at Hampden out wide rather than up the middle probably prevents the free kick happening. killiefaetheferry
Maybe Gauld comes into things next season. Surely he goes on loan at least ? Harper at Brighton, Fraser was ripping the Championship at Ipswich befote his injury, McArthur is developing into a top class holding midfielder, Tierney could be exactly what Strachan is talking about and could allow Robertson to play wide left midfield. PASTA Mick
I'll place my mortgage on us not getting to Russia.there is not a snowballs chance in hell.we just don't have the players. I tend to agree. England are too consistent against teams like us and others in the group to not finish top. We then need to finish 2nd, which will be tough, just to get in the play-offs. We are badly missing a top class player or 3.
blackcountry jock
As much as I would love to qualify for Russia I think we should look to the future let me explain.... Have a clear out look at younger player that will be around in 4/5/6 years time use the wc qualifiers as a kinda practise platform and build a team that in 2 years time will have some sort of force in the next euros and look at the World Cup after that to make a statement. All we ever do is plan for the upcoming campaign and hope we qualify why not have a 4/5 year plan and keep improving with younger player that will be the nucleus for the coming years

All we ever do is plan for the upcoming campaign and hope we qualify why not have a 4/5 year plan and keep improving with younger player that will be the nucleus for the coming years I read that a lot, in fact been reading that a lot for quite some years now. I think the truth is at Scotland's level, with the paucity of resource available in terms of players, we have to keep putting out the best 11 in every game no matter what age they are. Fair enough for big countries with a conveyer belt of talent that they are exporting around the leagues of the world you have the luxury of trying to develop younger guys, for Scotland its impossible to tell who will develop into an international player with a solid career, and in fact the odds are they won't, Bertie found that out the hard way. We were very unfortunate in a tough group, yes it seems like we are always saying that but a few small adjustments could be all we need! We have every chance of finishing in top 2 for WC qualifying! Success comes from consistency of application and tweaking your system as the dynamics of the market/environment change over time.
