Rome

Routings from Edinburgh at the moment for £132 return as well. It's the best trip of the Six Nations and I'm really looking forward to it next year - two years ago I got sunburnt in late February there so hoping for more of the same! Would recommend staying in the Trastevere district - lots of great bars and restaurants. Not long now!

It is an amazing city and apart from the well known stuff to see there is just hundreds of years of history casually discarded as they`ve never got round to fully excavating it. Each Roman Emporer more or less rubbished the one before him, tore down what he had built and started again.

As an example the Circus Maximus where up to 150,000 used to watch chariot racing ( think Ben Hur ) now just sits like 2 side by side council owned gravel football pitches with very little to tell you the history of the place

cheers for that info. I've got a right fancy looking place booked just beside central station. Just randomly fancied a change. Never been away with the rugby before so don't know what the craic will be like. Always go to murrayfield just never been away. Edited by SheepieTartanArmy

Cheers as this will be a solo trip will be doing a lot more touristy stuff than normal. For some reason really looking forward to this as always wanted to visit Rome since studying about the Romans when I was at high school.

Rome's braw! So many sights within relatively short walking distance - can easily start off at Piazza del Popolo and end up at the Collosseum taking in the Spanish Steps, Trevi, Piazza Navona, Pantheon enroute + lots more.

Vatican is well worth a visit. Castel Sant Angelo is a very impressive sight (didn't have time to visit tho). Villa Borghese is a lovely park to chill and have a nice al fresco lunch (at top of Spanish steps). Some lovely restaurants in Trastevere - over the Tiber which are a lot less expensive compared to places near the landmarks mentioned above.

We did the CitySightSeeing tour bus company as we'd enjoyed their service in other European cities however they appeared to be a lot less frequent compared to a few of the other operators - I think the most frequent was the 110 Tour Bus.

Enjoy!

Will also be there for the rugby though not so sure about going to the game. Have been twice before on rugby trips, right at the very start when they played in that great wee stadium. Incredible to think they are now filling the stadio olimpico.

Was there for new year last year and enjoyed it so much we are going again

Will be in touch next year after the latest visit.

Hope you like your grub as its all fantastic

I really enjoyed Rome and everything is walkable from each other when in the historical center, but would split your time up for one day doing all the sites and one day for the Vatican.

Circus Maximus did not impress me.... my first thought was "no better than Cathkin Park in Glasgow" :-)) should only be saved for when doing the open top bus and passing by.

One of my favorite places in Rome is Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini church.... it is pretty well hidden and not all that talked about, but it is a underground church where EVERYTHING is made of human bones.

We only did it on the last afternoon after exhausting everything else and eves dropped a American couple on the bus tour talking about it, so decided to give it a chance.

Wee tip on food/drink.

If you come out Termini station most of the major sights in the city are to the West/North and most tourists spend all their time in these areas.

I'm sure the touristy part of town has loads of excellent places to eat and drink with quality food and resonable prices.

I haven't f**** found them though.

Rome is one of my favourite cities - possibly number 1 - but there are a frightening number of lazy chefs serving up half hearted p*sh to American tourists at extortionate rates.

Therefore I recommend you head East of the station into San Lorenzo. The main campus of Sapienza Uni is nearby and the surrounding area has loads of great wee restaurants and pizza joints. They actually have Italian folk in them too...unlike the rest of the city. My wife and I spent every evening there on our last visit (Sept 2013) and it was cracking.

Wish i could remember the name of one restaurant in particular - we had 2 huge courses of top quality Itialian scran, a carafe of decent red wine and complimentary Limoncellos for about 40-50 Euros between us. If i mind the name or the street I'll post it here but there are plenty other choices so have a wee Google before you go.

They have a wee square in the middle of the area where loads of young studenty types meet up to drink and blether late at night. You get buskers and bands giving ramdom 'gigs'. Shops around seeling cairry oots for pennies.

Makes for a decent night out after stuffing your face food and wine.

Whole area is a bit 'rough and ready' by Roman standards which makes it 'pretty nice' by our standards and is safe as houses.
