There's a few cheap hotels on the street that runs between Republique and Bastille (can't remember its name), have stayed in a few of them. Hotel Picard is one that springs to mind (1 star, but its not like you're going to spend any significant quality time in your room), but there are a few others.

Walking distance to the Auld Alliance, rue du Rivoli, the Louvre and the bottom of the Champs D'Elysee.

Define cheap to begin with? Always found Ibis to be the best bet if you want a chain. If you are prepared to go to somewhere like La Defense which is quite an interesting, if very modern area, you might get some reasonable deals. Good links to all the sights but not what your average tourist is looking for in terms of the Paris experience

Don't think the Auld Alliance is in Scottish hands anymore.

I stay in Paris a few times per year for work so know some hotels. Cheap in Paris tends to mean about 90€ single 100€ double but events like Roland Garros tennis (just before Euro 2016 I think) tend to push prices up and I`m sure prices for next year are already high. i was at WC in 1998 (our first 2 games and others in Lens, Nantes and Marseille) and have been at other tournaments since in Portugal, Germany and Austria and remember having a great time in France but there was much less atmosphere in street even when France were playing than in other countries so wouldn`t give too much importance to being in city of match especially in Paris which is massive so you hardly know when there`s a match on. If it`s an early kick off look for somewhere out of town (France has great train network so you could stay in lots of places within an hour of Paris or even more and use night trains to places which will be better for a holiday on non match days). If staying in Paris, Improvements in high speed trains to Italy and Spain mean there are a lot of hotels near Gare de Lyon (Hotel Palym and Hotel Terminus Lyon are two reasonable ones) which is quite a good area for transport to other parts of Paris and for going out at night.

In April we stayed in the Ibis Styles on Rue de Tolbiac in the 13th. It was OK, nothing special, but was fairly inexpensive and did the job. I quite liked the area which is on the up, just across the river from Bercy and also quite near Place d'Italie. In any case a couple of hundred yards from Biblioteque Francois Mitterand station for Metro or RER.

Depends on your budget

If you want a knockout location try le train bleu at Gare de Lyons http://www.le-train-bleu.com/uk/index.php

I would also recommend either of the Paul Bert restaurants although they are well off the tourist trail. However they are well worth the hike. The rum baba is something else. They put the cake in front of you with a bottle of rum and you can add as much or as little as you want.

My mate went to the Jules Verne in the Eiffel Tower but that was nose bleedingly expensive

Bowfinger at the Bastille is also a lovely location and quality food with good service.

There is also a restaurant bar at the top of the Pompidou Centre which gives good views over Paris

Nowhere in Paris is 2 hours away from somewhere else in Paris. Which bit of the 20th is it?

As a top tip, there's a basic kyriad hotel in arcueil right next to the rer b station. The area isn't great but its really not that far and it should be much cheaper than the more central hotels. It's 14 mins from Saint Michel. The 'banlieu' is quite good for that but its true that a lot of tourists don't want to stay there on their romantic breaks...

Okay so using range route planner online it appears that it would take about 2 hours to get from the hotel to around the centre.

Anyone recommend a decent budget hotel in Paris that's easy to access the city from?

We stayed here http://www.cosmos-hotel-paris.com/

2 mins walk from Bastile metro station. Was decent, plenty of boozers near by. It's a studenty area so bars were cheap.

Think we were 80 euros a night.

Bofinger at the Bastille is also a lovely location and quality food with good service.

Went with Bofinger, great recommendation, cheers.

Place looks brilliant, service was great and very attentive and the food is superb. The Chateaubriand I had absolutely melted in the mouth, cooked perfectly. Would recommend it to anyone.

:ok:
