Can't say I'm happy with his public interventions and utterances over the last couple of days.......he's simply giving the Unionists a target to attack, and his increased public presence runs the risk of once again polarising and alienating people who may be considering voting SNP.

Sturgeon has done a fantastic job in the last 6 months. The last thing we need is Salmond coming along and deliberately whipping up a storm which allows the Unionists to accuse the SNP of being extremists.

It will be worth it if he can get the message across "I'll have to ask my boss". Don't forget, Nicola has also had quite a high UK media profile recently.

That would blow certain people's minds, to have a party with a significant presence in the UK parliament, but their leader not being anywhere near Westminster.

"deliberately whipping up a storm"

eh?

Exactly what has he done?

Seems to me he has been the target of a storm over the last few weeks.

He's giving newspaper excuses to write about Alex Salmond and like Rossy said, that's a polarising exercise when we really need to continue picking up No voters. It's one of the reasons I wasn't overly happy when he announced intention to run for Westminster. because when he's elected, he'll be front and centre again. IMO, Nicola Sturgeon has been absolutely first rate since taking over, and we need her profile to continue as it is, not have it compete with Salmond's. I was a big fan of Sturgeon's before she turned leader but even Im still impressed with how well she'd been doing.

Remarkable on things have changed since September. Salmond's interventions have the whiff of yesterday's heavyweight to me, and don't quite carry the same gravitas as they did. Journo's and pundits are enjoying sticking the boot in so it's easy column inches with which to attack the SNP. I'd far prefer he stuck at it in the background for the time being. If and when the SNP return a good number of MPs in May, I'm nervous about the bravado we're going to see from Salmond as as he attempts to speak on Scotland's behalf. Salmond speaking for all of Scotland is something half of Scotland absolutely could not stand in the run up to the referendum.

I've not seen anything from him other than a few soundbytes about his book. What exactly has he said that could have the SNP painted as extremists?... Unless he's announced he disagrees with almost all of their economic policy :wink2:

When have the SNP ever done anything to be painted as extremists? Hasn't stopped the press before. I think the more general point is that Salmond is divisive and polarising, and in the post-referendum, Sturgeon SNP, it's hardly a huge electoral asset.

You think the press depict the SNP as extremists?

Most of the Salmond panic seems to be in England though, where they can't vote for him or the SNP.

Perhaps the FM's impending appearances on the tv debates will redress that a bit?...

The panic is in the Westminster establishment. They know the damage that Salmond will cause to their cosy environment if he is elected with a huge rump of snp mp's. TBH I have been disappointed with Sturgeon so far. She has been a bit stodgy in performance although her game has picked up in recent weeks and I'm sure she will bloom into a good FM in the fullness of time.

What Salmond should be doing in the above scenario is shutting the feck up and leaving all interviews to the Westminster leader, Angus Robertson. Salmond should work hard at being an excellent constituency MP and also assist Robertson in any way he is asked.

The SNP have a once in a lifetime opportunity here, if they play it right, they could cement their massive support in Scotland and also lay the ground for Indy Ref #2. I love Salmond but there's no denying he's a polarising figure. If he allows his ego to run away with itself then it could damage the 2nd chance we have.

he is easily the most capable politician in the uk at the moment. I think thats widely accepted. he could run rings round most of the numpties in westminster.

I could probably agree with that. But it doesn't really answer my question. I've seen a lot of chat about shaking up the establishment and "The bigger picture". but I'm no further forward in understanding why... Because people can't seem to be able to explain it.

oh FFS... one of the most capable, inspiring and also bruising politicians in the UK today, in his political prime, and easily the SNP's best and folk want him step into political obscurity... and for what exactly?

Nicola is riding a post referendum wave, and if anything I think Salmond is doing a good job keeping the attention off her and on him to some extent. The media are utter scum remember she is not going to get a fair hearing no matter what and it is just a question of when not if they turn nasty on her. Especially if the SNP threaten to hold the balance of power blah blah feckin blah... I would not be surprised if this was something Salmond was doing on purpose with her knowledge. He is running interference. I just wonder where they are going with this. I cannot stomach any coalition. Make them form a coalition or a minority government (it was good enough for Scotland after all).

Good. If all the MSM keeps their focus on Salmond then that allows another 40 or 50 odd SNP candidates to secure their local constituency and send a pile of them to Westminster.

Funny, only a few months ago they were saying how integral Scotland is to the United Kingdom, but now there's a chance of the biggest Scottish influence in recent (or total) history at Westminster they're feart.

And also I think when you have faced such a biased and shit bag media for as long as Salmond you do become a bit of a street fighter in debates because otherwise they would steamroller over the top of you on TV. If any one of us tried to do what he does in interviews with the BBC whanks we would get massacred. He doea an amazing job but yeah he can annoy a lot of folk at the same time, mainly the ones that just saw their arguments reduced to rubble in a jovial manner. That is when they complain he is 'arrogant'. You'd in have to be.

Never thought he'd be this naive, a significant own goal in my opinion.
