Was meant to see him at T in the park, but he pulled out after a freak accident - got a lippy pop stuck in his eye apparently.

I think Jim McLean attacked him with a hammer. That's why he had to pull out.

Fantastic musician. Very sad news. I never even knew he was unwell.

Bloody hell!!! :(

This was a TAMBer who cried wolf thread for me, had to check the Beeb first.

Was just digging Lazarus on the radio through the night, a real return to form but now a poignant swan song. Absolute legend RIP Mr Jones :( :( :(

Same. The first time i looked BBC weren't reporting it, so just assumed it was the "old joke".

At his best he was incredible, and he was at his best far more often than most. Apart from Dylan I can't think of another living rock musician who's as important, and growing up he was more important than Dylan to me. Guess I will be getting Blackstar on vinyl now - I'd more or less talked myself out of it. 'We can be heroes ...'

Was never really that big a Bowie fan growing up. Liked the odd track but he didn't really resonate with me. When I was 19 he was playing the Barras and my mate who is a massive fan wanted to go so I went along with him. Bowie opened the gig just him on the stage with an acoustic guitar, smoke machine and a spotlight doing a song I'd never heard before in my life - Quicksand. It is genuinely one of those moments in your life when everything round about you seems to stop and I was completely transfixed. He was just mesmermising and I couldn't believe I'd never heard such an amazing song before. I know I loved that gig but the only thing I can remember about is Quicksand at the start and it's a song that has stayed with me to this day and is right up there among my favourite songs by any artist. The closing refrain of "Knowledge comes with deaths release" seems particularly poignant today.

Taking the thread off topic for a second. I saw Rancid at the Barrowlands about 10-12 years ago and Lars Frederiksen started the show in the same manner, solo, accoustic, and a cover of Billy Braggs "To Have and To Have Not" which he'd covered with his other band "Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards". Same as you, I was transfixed.

Not comparing oor Lars to Bowie of course, just the events are similar.

Saw him at the SECC in 1995, probably at the nadir of his career post Tin Machine. Morrissey had been supporting him but had left the tour for some reason, they were offering full refunds before the gig and the queue was huge. I got to the front and the woman said "You actually want to BUY a ticket?"

I mind some of the comments in the paper the next day "I like David Bowie but he's not worth £25". Hard to believe now!

Never really was much of a Bowie fan growing up (the Pet Shop Boys remix of Spaceboy in the 90's was probably my introduction to him) but knew of his mainstream work which I found so-so (Rebel Rebel was one of the first riffs I learnt to play on Guitar).... then got into his back catalogue when got into Placebo who covered a number of his songs live and as B-sides and then started working with him, where I think his early 80's phase was probably my favorite.
