The BBC have just published a report which mentions Scottish players in England

In England's Premier League a total of 18 Scottish players were used in the first six matches compared with 15 last term. This made up 4.87% of the Premier League - up from last season's 3.22%.

That leaves Scotland fourth on the list in the English top flight, behind England, France and Spain. Promoted Burnley and Hull City each used three Scots while Stoke City, Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace used two. Scottish players also spent time on the pitch for Manchester United, Aston Villa, Everton and QPR.

Scottish players had more minutes on the pitch in the Premier League than the Republic of Ireland (4.22%), Wales (2.45%) and Northern Ireland (1.53%).

The percentage of minutes played by Scottish players in England's Championship was almost unchanged, from 9.53% to 9.52%.

In the Scottish Premiership, Scottish players spent fewer minutes on the pitch, from 55.66% to 50.78% of the total.

I would wager the statistical decline of Scottish players in the Scottish league since last season is mostly due to the in-administration Hearts team of last season (almost all of whom were Scots) being replaced by a team in a more normal condition (i.e. either Hamilton or Dundee) this season. Of course Hearts themselves have signed a few foreign players to strengthen their squad since coming out of admin. So the figure last year was abnormally high due to that unusual situation (a team being in admin for a full season).

It's reasonably encouraging that the percentage of Scottish players in the EPL has gone up quite a bit since 2007/08 (from just over 3% to nearer 5%). Although it's still dangerously low IMO. The gap between English Championship and high international standard is too great to rely mostly on players from that league. The odd one here or there is okay to fill certain needs, but we need greater depth and better quality in the spine of the team (centre half in particular).

I don't buy into that for a few reasons. Firstly, a number of those playing in the championship have Epl, Spl and Champions League experience such as Maloney, David Marshall, Berra, Hanley, Whittaker, Russell Martin, Johnny Russell, Craig Bryson, Chris Burke and probably a few more. Also as I have posted elsewhere I judge players on their worth/performances for us not what club they play for. Look back in time and we had players playing at the very best clubs and they never brought that form into Scotland matches - players like Hansen, Gillespie and Nicol of the great Liverpool side, Archibald (Barcelona), McClair (Man. United), Charlie Nicholas (Arsenal), McAllister (Leeds and Liverpool), Charlie Adam (Liverpool) and Michael Stewart (Man. United) to name but a few. On the other side of the coin we have had players not reach the heights of playing for a big club and some not even playing in the EPL who have done admirable jobs for us such as Graham Alexander, Neil McCann, Paul Lambert, Paul Hartley and I am sure I could reel off many more. Besides I'd sooner our players are getting regular first team football than be at a bigger club warming the bench as Darren Fletcher is.

Paul Lambert won the Champions league with Borussia Dortmund and played in the Uefa cup final for Celtic.

Also, Michael Stewart never made it past the youths for Man U. You may as well lump Danny Wilson and GMS (Both Liverpool) if you are naming him.

But you make a valid point. Playing at a big team in the EPL is not the measure of ability. As I've mentioned before, there is the home grown player rule in England. So the top 6 are always going to have Englishmen in their team.

However, a bi-product of this is that EPL teams are scouting our youths very early, so they qualify. Hence Danny Wilson signing for liverpool at 18. Swansea have just poached 3 Scots that will count as home grown. As have Everton (Kennedy)

It means that more and more Scots will likely be getting more opportunity in the top league over the coming years. Which can only be a good thing

Point taken but again youths at EPL clubs still doesn't guarantee they will go on to make great players for Scotland. I recall a young striker called Robbie Foy (at Liverpool) being raved about because of the club he was at but vanished without trace. Another to disappear it would seem is Islam Feruz who was at Celtic then Chelsea. Michael Stewart at United is another and so on and so on. Look at our side at present and one of the first names down on the team sheet is Anya and he has never played top flight football. Conversely, you don't find many here calling for the re-inclusion of Charlie Adam even though he plays regularly in the Epl with Stoke and has played at Liverpool.

Look at our most potent goalscorer of this century - Kenny Miller. He had very little EPL experience but it never stopped him delivering for us. Also look at Northern Ireland's David Healey - precious little top flight football in his career yet he went on to be a record goalscorer for them.

Kenny Miller and potent in same sentence?

By Scotland strikers standards - certainly.

69 Caps 18 Goals so a goal in just under every four games. Nobody in our current squad is anywhere near that. Ally McCoist would be described potent and his record is only marginally better (61 Caps 19 Goals) and remember McCoist played in teams that were qualifing for majors plus had a strike partner.

I agree, Michael Stewart and some others simply weren't good enough. Though you could argue some weren't given a fair shot.

The positive thing I would say for the likes of Grimmer, Kennedy and the Swansea boys is that they will get first class coaching and may turn them into even better players than they otherwise would have. But there is plenty of variables. Who's to say Falkirk can't produce better players than, say, West Ham.

Re Kenny Miller. He was a bit of a journeyman but he did play for Derby and Wolves in the EPL and in the champions league with both Celtic and Rangers. Playing for either of these teams now m8ght not mean much, but it did when we were standing shoulder to shoulder with The English giants not so long ago
