None of those scenarios mention how much money can be earned, which as we all know is the SFA's only real concern.
stocky
Ask Greece for a Friendly... Away, good for Fans, good for rankings, if we win( should do) or Sweden at Home , we always seen to beat them...
Sherps
Reminds of when the Welsh only had to play one friendly to avoid being in Pot 6 in our World Cup Quali group. A blogger (I'm sure it was the football-rankings.info guy) e-mailed the Welsh FA to let them know, but they just ignored him and ended up in Pot 6 anyway. As the Gibraltar game will be shootie-in, we may see a friendly round about then, if the SFA are aware of this. A game against a strategically picked, highly ranked but on poor form opponent like a Russia, Greece etc?

Tartan blood
Ask Greece for a Friendly... Away, good for Fans, good for rankings, if we win( should do) or Sweden at Home , we always seen to beat them...I was going to say the same thing. Greece have been riding off the Euro 2004 success for far too long. We should play them and gain a co-efficient boost before they drop much further in the rankings. One plus is, it seems we are at least guaranteed pot 3. An improvement on being 4th seeds this time. This makes friendlies a lot more meaningful. Which is why I could never understand when we booked unwinnable friendlies against the likes of Brazil. SFA clearly just saw £ signs and jumped at it. Switzerland (12th) might be worth the risk. Croatia (14th) not sure they'd fancy a rematch. Algeria (15th) Greece (18th) Romania (21st) Iceland (28th) Plenty of beatable teams high up in the rankings. bajin
Is it overkill for me to think the SFA should hire someone whose sole job is figuring this stuff out? Seems to be far too important these days to not give it maximum attention. Obviously not on the same scale, but it reminds me a little of the sabermetrics revolution in baseball. (See the Moneyball film, for example.) Used to be that teams didn't really care about advanced statistical analysis of players until Oakland started paying attention and got big gains. Nowadays every team has teams of guys specialising in figuring it out. As I said, the FIFA ranking thing is nowhere near as complicated, but surely still warrants some serious study. Switzerland as well... would be acceptable. Do we get more points for home or away....
bajin
It used to be more points for away games, but they scrapped that a few years back. It makes no difference now.

Makes no difference at all where the game is played. It is a very good article.
tartanpar
Teams with high rankings and are on the way down is who we should be looking at Greece and BiH are my choices although I am not sure where they will be in the rankings come March. kumnio
Just had a wee look, theres maybe 10 decent fixtures that we would have a chance in. Cmon SFA, do your job for once.

Armchair Bob
It is also worth noting that if the match this month with England had not been arranged, a draw in Dublin next year would have been enough to guarantee a place in pot two. FFS SFA!
ParisInAKilt
i guess the SFA wouldn't have known that at the time of organising the friendly, although it's really annoying when we almost certainly know it was arranged because of the financial benefits and not for the team
ParisInAKilt
We were 4th weren't we for this campaign? Rankings and the date of the draw is deeply flawed. Pretty sure by the time of the campaign start debate we were well ahead of poland and Ireland in the rankings. Same with the last campaign, Wales were 6th at the time of the draw but had moved to pot 4 I think by the time the group started
